The Role of the Religious Education Teacher in Fostering Inter-Religious Tolerance at SMAN 03 Cibinong

Abstract

Humans are both individual and social beings who require interaction to meet their needs and achieve personal growth. Amidst the diversity of Indonesian society, interfaith tolerance is a crucial aspect of maintaining unity, supporting development, and reducing social inequality. This study highlights the role of religious tolerance education in shaping students' character, fostering openness and respect for differences from an early age. Teachers play a vital role as guides, facilitators, and motivators in the learning process; they do not merely teach academic material but also instill values ​​of tolerance through interfaith activities and harmony training, thereby creating a school environment conducive to mutual respect. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this research—conducted at SMAN 03 Cibinong—demonstrates that concrete actions such as joint religious activities, scripture literacy, and the implementation of the "5S" practices (smile, greet, salute, politeness, and courtesy) are effective in fostering tolerance. Religious tolerance education in schools is expected to serve as a long-term solution for cultivating a generation that wisely embraces differences and contributes to the harmony of Indonesia's diverse society.
