The movement of belief from one religion to another, or religious conversion, is increasingly common in various communities and has various psychological, social, and cultural impacts; this study raises four main questions: (1) how is religious conversion conceptually defined, (2) what are the characteristics of conversion based on the factors causing it, (3) what stages do individuals go through in the conversion process, and (4) what characteristics emerge after someone changes their belief; the method used is a literature study with the selection and critical analysis of primary and secondary literature including books on sociology and psychology of religion theory, indexed journal articles, and documents on the Qur'an and the 1945 Constitution Article 29 paragraph 2 followed by synthesis to build a comprehensive conceptual framework; the results of the study indicate that religious conversion has five main characteristics (voluntary, social, personal crisis, forced, and marriage), takes place through four stages (interest, exploration, decision, and integration), and displays changes in beliefs, worship patterns, attitudes, and involvement in new communities, so that a holistic understanding of this process is expected to reduce stigma and increase tolerance.
