Abstract

This study aims to analyze shifts in Muslim fashion styles among students at the Faculty of Da'wa and Communication Sciences, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, as a representation of their religious identity amidst the currents of modernization and the influence of social media. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the study gathered data through observation and in-depth interviews with students and academics. The findings reveal that students' Muslim fashion styles have undergone a significant transformation, often prioritizing aesthetics over shar'i (Islamic) values. Social media acts as a dominant factor in shaping clothing preferences, frequently causing a shift in the meaning of attire from a symbol of piety to an expression of aesthetics. Nevertheless, some students continue to strive to uphold shar'i values as part of their religious identity. The study concludes that these changes in Muslim fashion reflect a process of negotiating religious identity within the context of urban culture and globalization, while also highlighting the importance of ongoing education to ensure students do not lose sight of Islamic values when expressing themselves through clothing.
